[the rules]
1 Say what i mean mean what i say
that’s the first rule to live by.
honesty and authenticity
and learning to speak
only what I mean to speak.

I feel I’ve always tried to do this–
the words that leave my lips
are words I mean, but
it’s more challenging
to get the words past lips at all.

I always mean what I say even
if sometimes I want to bite it back
the moment my tongue lashes out
even though sometimes I would like to dig a hole
and bury myself in it
or run away from the raw of what I’ve said.

Say what you mean. That’s the hard part
because what I mean is often unknown
even to me and I can’t
make sense of the tangle of emotions
to work them from my
heart to tongue to lips.
