In which the poet is political

Some of you would hand over the runaway to the slave patrols
in the name of law and order.

Some of you would say that not all slave catchers are cruel.
Maybe that man wouldn’t have been lynched, if he’d just let
those slave patrols keep beating on those women.
Maybe he just should’ve stayed home, if he didn’t want to get shot.

Maybe the slave catchers just need more training.
You know, better skills so they don’t accidentally
beat someone or shoot someone or hang someone
to death, for just wanting to be free.

Some of you would stand and watch a lynching
and scold anyone who interfered because
they didn’t ask nicely, for the execution to stop.

This isn’t about slavery, by the way.
This is about abolish ICE.
Not train ICE, not limit ICE.
This is extreme measures for extreme times.

This is about the dangers of calling for moderation
when only scorched earth will do.
